Our story

Money should be understandable, not mysterious.

Most people do not have a finance problem, they have a visibility problem. Karchu turns raw bank statements into a clear, honest picture of your money in minutes, without handing your data to an opaque AI or forcing you to babysit a spreadsheet.

Our mission

Give every person and small team a truthful view of their money.

Personal finance software has spent the last decade optimizing for the wrong things. Aggregators collect your credentials and quietly resell anonymized spending data. Newer AI tools promise magic categorization but cannot tell you why a coffee shop transaction landed in "software subscriptions." Spreadsheets are honest, but they are also fragile, unshared, and hostile to anyone who joins the household or business after month three.

We started Karchu because the people we love most, our parents, our siblings, our first freelance clients, deserved better than that. They deserved a tool that respected their privacy, showed its work, and did not require an accounting degree to use. That is the tool we set out to build, and it is the tool we keep building today.

Our promise is simple. Upload a statement, get a clear picture in minutes, and always be able to answer the question "why did it show me this?" without asking anyone else. Everything else, the dashboards, the rules engine, the multi-organization workspaces, the exports, exists in service of that promise.

What we believe

Four values we do not negotiate on

These are not marketing lines. They are the filters every product and business decision at Karchu passes through.

Privacy by default
Your statements are yours. We parse locally where possible, encrypt everything at rest, and never sell, rent, or use your data to train models.
Deterministic over magical
Rules you can read and edit beat black-box AI you have to trust. Every categorization has an explanation, and every explanation has an edit button.
Small business first
We build for the freelancer, the family, and the ten-person team, not the Fortune 500. Pricing, defaults, and support all reflect that.
Bank-agnostic and portable
We support any bank that produces a CSV, Excel, or PDF statement. Your data is exportable, in open formats, forever.
Timeline

A short history of Karchu

Karchu did not start in a boardroom. It started in a group chat. Below is the honest version of how we got from a weekend script to the product you are reading about today, including the parts that were harder than we expected.

  1. 2023

    The napkin sketch

Karchu started as a weekend script one of our founders wrote to reconcile a shared household account across three banks. The script grew arms and legs.

  2. 2024

    First private beta

We opened a small beta to accountants and freelancers we knew personally. Their feedback shaped the rules engine and the multi-organization model.

  3. 2025

    Public launch

We opened Karchu to everyone with support for 55+ banks across the US, UK, India, Australia, and the UAE, plus a free trial on every plan.

  4. 2026

    Where we are today

Thousands of individuals, freelancers, and small teams use Karchu each month to understand their money in minutes instead of afternoons.

The problem

Why the existing tools were not enough

Before we wrote a single line of Karchu, we spent months using every tool we could find, from legacy personal finance apps to brand new AI-first startups. A few patterns kept repeating, and each one felt like an unforced error.

The first pattern was credential harvesting. Most aggregators require you to hand over your online banking username and password, or a token that behaves like one, and then keep those credentials on their servers. That is a lot of trust to extend to a company you have never met, especially when a single breach exposes every account you connected. We wanted a model where the sensitive artifact, the statement itself, could be dragged in from a download folder and, in many cases, never even leave your browser.

The second pattern was opaque categorization. Newer AI tools would confidently label a transaction "Business travel" or "Groceries" without ever explaining why. When they were right, they felt magical. When they were wrong, they felt gaslighting. There was no rule to inspect, no keyword to edit, and no way to prevent the same mistake from happening next month. We believed that categorization should be a conversation you can have with the tool, not a verdict it hands down.

The third pattern was the spreadsheet trap. Spreadsheets are wonderful because they are honest, but they are terrible at three things people actually need: sharing safely, staying consistent as your data grows, and making it easy for a new team member to pick up where you left off. We wanted the honesty of a spreadsheet with the structure of a real product.

The fourth pattern was pricing that assumed you were a large business. Many finance tools start at 40 or 50 dollars per user per month, with the "individual" plan tucked away as a loss leader that is missing the features that make the tool useful. We wanted a pricing model where a freelancer, a family, and a ten-person firm each get a plan that actually fits them.

Karchu is our answer to those four patterns, all in one product.

How we work

Principles that shape the product

Values tell you what we believe. Principles tell you what we actually do about it, on days when it would be easier to cut a corner.

  • You own your data end to end. Export anytime, delete anytime, no dark patterns.
  • No feature exists to trap you. Downgrades are one click. Cancellations are respected.
  • Every automated decision is inspectable. If you cannot see why, we have not built it right.
  • Speed is a feature. Upload to first insight should be under two minutes on a laptop.
  • Documentation is product. If it is not documented, it does not really ship.
Who Karchu is for

Built for the people the enterprise tools forgot

Three audiences we design for every week. If you recognize yourself in one of them, you will feel at home in Karchu.

Individuals and families
See the whole household in one dashboard, split by person, category, or account, without giving a spreadsheet a name.
Freelancers and creators
Separate business and personal spending, tag deductible expenses, and hand a clean export to your accountant at tax time.
Small teams and firms
Multi-organization workspaces, role-based access, seat management, and audit logs designed for real accountability.
The team

A small team, obsessed with a big problem

Karchu is built by a deliberately small team of engineers, accountants, and designers spread across three continents. We have all spent parts of our careers inside larger financial products, and we have all watched the same pattern play out, teams grow, priorities blur, and the person who originally cared about the customer stops being the person who ships to them.

We are staying small on purpose. Every person who works on Karchu talks to customers directly, ships to production regularly, and owns the outcome of what they build. Support is not a separate department, it is a rotation. Product decisions are not made by a committee that has never opened the app, they are made by the same people who wrote the last release notes.

We believe that the size of a team should match the size of the problem it can hold in its head. The problems we care about, private, deterministic, portable financial clarity for people who are not enterprises, fit comfortably in a small team's head. So that is what we are.

Security and trust

How we handle your data

Financial data is the most sensitive category of data most people ever create. It reveals where you live, where you shop, who you pay, and what you value. We treat that reality as the starting point for every decision, not as a footnote in a privacy policy.

Karchu parses CSV and Excel statements in your browser whenever possible, so raw rows do not need to travel to our servers unless you choose to save them. Everything we do store is encrypted at rest, isolated per organization through row-level security, and accessible only to the specific roles you have granted access to. We do not sell data, we do not rent data, and we do not train third-party AI models on your transactions.

We also believe that trust is earned through transparency, not through certifications alone. Our security page documents exactly what we store, where we store it, how long we retain it, and how you can export or delete it at any time. If a question is not answered there, ask us directly and we will answer honestly, including when the honest answer is "we have not solved that yet."

Honest limits

What Karchu is not

We think a product's honesty shows most clearly in what it refuses to be. Karchu is not a full accounting suite, and we are not trying to replace one. If you need double-entry ledgers, accrual accounting, statutory filings, and payroll, keep using the accounting platform you already trust. Karchu sits happily upstream of it, giving you the clean, categorized, exportable view of your bank activity that those tools ask you to produce anyway.

We are also not a budgeting coach. We will show you where your money went, and we will let you set targets and see how you are tracking against them, but we will not send you push notifications shaming you for buying coffee. We think financial clarity, given respectfully, is the intervention. What you do with that clarity is your business.

We are not an AI oracle either. We use automation where it earns its keep, but we will always show you the rule, the keyword, or the pattern that produced a result, and we will always let you overrule it. If you want a tool that hides its reasoning behind a chat bubble, there are plenty of those. Karchu is not one of them.

What is next

Where we are going

The next chapter of Karchu is about depth, not breadth. We are doubling down on the bank coverage that matters most in the markets we already serve, deepening the rules engine so a single well-written rule can replace a hundred manual edits, and expanding our exports so that Karchu plays nicely with whatever accounting or tax tool you already use.

We are also investing in shared reports, so that a freelancer can send a read-only view to their accountant without granting seat access, and a family can share a household dashboard without merging identities. And we are working on a lightweight Chrome extension for people who prefer to download statements directly from their bank's web portal, so that the "get the file" step gets shorter too.

None of this involves collecting more data than we need, or making the product harder to leave. Growth for us means being useful to more of the right people, not being harder to escape for the ones already here.

Come see for yourself

Every plan starts with a 30-day free trial. No credit card, no forced onboarding call, and a one-click cancel if it is not for you. Upload a statement, get a clear picture in minutes, and decide from there.
