Receipt analysis

Fields Karchu extracts from a receipt, and how a receipt is matched to an existing transaction with a stated confidence.

Last updated 2026-09-11

Karchu reads a photographed or scanned receipt and tries to connect it to a transaction that already exists in the workspace.

What is extracted

  • Extract merchant, date, subtotal, tax, tip, total, currency, payment method and line items
  • Assign a category to the receipt and, where present, to individual line items
  • Match a receipt to an existing transaction using amount, date proximity, merchant and account
  • Report the match confidence and the signals behind it
  • Leave a receipt unmatched rather than attaching it to the wrong transaction

Example match

receipt: STARBUCKS, 2026-02-14, total 12.40 USD
transaction: 2026-02-15, debit 12.40, merchant "STARBUCKS #4821"
match: 0.97 (amount exact, 1 day apart, merchant similar)

Limits

  • Faded thermal receipts and heavily creased photographs extract with lower field confidence
  • A receipt with no matching transaction stays unmatched until the statement covering it is imported

Questions

Which fields come off a receipt?
Merchant, date, subtotal, tax, tip, total, currency, payment method and line items where the receipt prints them, plus a category.
How is a receipt matched to a transaction?
By amount, date proximity, merchant similarity and account. The match is shown with a confidence figure, and a receipt is left unmatched rather than attached to the wrong row.
Can I photograph a receipt with my phone?
Yes. PNG, JPG and HEIC photographs are accepted. The image is deskewed and normalised before OCR, and low confidence fields are sent to review.
